Book Review: Early Toys from Thuringia and the Erzgebirge Region
IN MAY 2012 AN interesting book on German toys aiming at collectors of 19th century German toys was published by the renowned German Swantje-Koehler-Verlag specializing in antique toys. This new volume is a treasure trove for all collectors of early German toys made of wood and papier-mache.

With brilliant color pictures never published before it portrays the unbelievable variety of early German wooden and paper-mache toys from Nuremberg, Thuringia and the Erzgebirge region and compares them with many hitherto unpublished illustrations from early sample books and sample sheets. The toys comprise pull-toys, squeakers, crank toys, playsets from rural and urban life, soldiers, dollhouse furniture, dishes and papier-mache dolls.

Like all the previous books on toys published by the German Swantje-Koehler-Verlag, the book has been well researched and is based on original documents and figures from the 19th century.
