VINELAND, N.J. – You never know what will come through the doors of Bertoia Auctions’ spacious, fully showcased New Jersey gallery. Sometimes a toy is brought in that can be slotted into the next appropriate sale without delay. Other times, a consignor is better served by letting the toy wait to be included in a future sale with other toys of a related category. But when enough toys are waiting in the wings for their well-deserved turn at auction, Bertoia’s will organize one of their popular mixed sales, like the one planned for March 23-24, 2012.

“Collectors really enjoy our all-inclusive sales because there’s such an element of surprise. Every imaginable type of toy can be found in these sales,” said Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia. “Our March event, which we’re calling our ‘Made to Be Played’ auction, contains 1,400 toy lots of great diversity and quality, with a special highlight – the European toy collection of Grover Van Dexter. Grover established one of America’s earliest antique toyshops, Second Childhood in New York’s Greenwich Village. Without a doubt, he knows what’s genuinely rare and special.”

The auction includes a spectacular array of cast-iron automotive toys – autos, busses, trucks and motorcycles – many of them coming from the same collection that was featured in Bertoia’s November sale.

“Collectors are going to love this grouping. Most of the toys are in excellent or better condition, and there are many hard-to-find pieces,” said Bertoia. The top-drawer offering includes a U.S. Co. White van made by Arcade, and several outstanding Vindex toys: a P&H steam shovel, various sedans and coupes with Donald Kaufman provenance, and more. Horse-drawn highlights include a Tally Ho, Shimer fire vehicles, and a one of a kind Kenton four-horse caisson with three seated figures. The weighty Kenton production measures approximately 3ft. long.

Among the approximately 75-80 mechanical banks are many very nice choices for both dealers and collectors, including a Darktown Battery, Lion and Monkey, Calamity, and Eagle and Eaglets. There are also two elusive Mama Katzenjammer banks – one being a first casting; the other, a second casting. The mechanicals will be followed by 80-85 still banks, with standouts being a fine example of Cupola Building with belfry, a desirable Old South Church, and a series of Kenton banks replicating safes.

Another knockout selection of cast-iron doorstops – part II of the Chuck and Barbara Cook collection – fills three display cases at Bertoia’s. Within the more than 100 figural novelties are seven different Art Deco designs by Fish, including Bathing Beauties, Bellhop, Tango Dancers, Footman and Maid. Additionally, there are some fabulous florals, a Lobster, and a Rhumba Dancer. A series of Taylor & Cook doorstops is led by examples of the company’s Monkey, Penguin, Elephant and Parrot.

Any active collector of the past two generations would know about Grover Van Dexter’s legendary Second Childhood, a gem of a shop that, for nearly 40 years, was the most famous antique toy emporium in America. It closed its doors in 2009 and all store stock was sent off to auction. Now Bertoia’s will have the privilege of auctioning Van Dexter’s private collection, which includes scores of rare Lehmann and Martin tin wind-ups.

“Grover was so ahead of his time in collecting European toys that he was able to gather up some of the nicest – and rarest – examples I’ve seen in many years,” said Bertoia. The list of French-made Martins includes a Parisian Woman in exquisite condition, one of a few such toys known in France; a Prussian Soldier with rifle, an obscure flywheel locomotive, boxed White Bear, Safari Hunter, and a superb Organ Grinder.

The sale’s 50 Lehmanns came from both Van Dexter’s and one other private collection. The grouping includes a Ski Rolf, three different motorcycles – a Halloh and two color variations of the Echo – plus a Boxer Rebellion and CoCo Climbing the Palm Tree.

Van Dexter’s collection includes both hand-painted and lithographed European toys. Rarities include a skin diver with a wind-up propeller between its legs [maker unknown], a Topolino in Car, early Gunthermanns, including three clowns on a park bench; and girls playing ring around the rosie. His sub-collection of 20 Charlie Chaplin toys includes Hippodrome Parisien and a ball-toss game – each believed to be the only known survivor.

The revered collection was the source of numerous European walking novelty figures, several tin buses, e.g., Bamberger’s, Strawbridge & Clothier, etc., and many of the 75-80 penny toys to be offered in the March sale. The European tin section also includes Ferris wheels and luxury clockwork tin limos from Van Dexter and other consignors.

Another colorful helping of vintage comic character toys from the Ron and Sandy Rosen lifetime collection will cross the auction block on March 23-24. Many classics are included: Hi-Way Henry, Joe Penner and His Duck, Charlie McCarthy, Dagwood, Pinocchio, the Merry Makers Band, Popeye, and Maggie and Jiggs. A few robots are to be sold, as well.

Listen for the whistle to blow as a small grouping of American standard gauge and European O and 1 gauge trains comes rolling down the track. Top lots include two Marklin trains: an EE 1021 and a PRR [Pennsylvania Railroad] set.

Early American tin, which has never lost its staunch core of followers amongst toy collectors, will be led by two large Fallows fire pumpers and a George Brown clockwork fire engine made to emulate the primitive, real-life Lee & Larnard model.

The auction also features a collection of fine steam toys that belonged to the late Klaus Grutzka, a German-born Pennsylvanian whose history included working as a mechanic on a German undersea “U-boat.” Grutzka was also a gifted artist who taught art at the prestigious Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. “Everyone liked Klaus. He was a real gentleman and extremely knowledgeable,” said Bertoia. “You could ask him any question and get an encyclopedia for an answer. His rare combination of mechanical and artistic talent is reflected in the steam toys he collected.”

The auction mix is rounded out with 50-60 Schoenhut toys, including a rare Wolf and Hyena; mechanical music boxes and vending/slot machines; figural cast-iron amusement park targets, and several salesmen’s samples and patent models.

Not to be overlooked is the antique advertising section, whose highlights include a rare 43-inch-tall cast-iron Baker’s Cocoa sign, a figural cast-iron glove factory sign shaped as a hand, and others.

“We know everyone’s going to have a wonderful time at this auction,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner, Jeanne Bertoia. “There are so many toy categories represented in the sale, every collector will have a chance to take home something wonderful.”

Start times for Bertoia’s “Made to Be Played” auction are 12 noon on Friday, March 23; and 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 24. Preview the auction weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as from 9 a.m. prior to the Friday session and 8 a.m. prior to the Saturday session.

The fully illustrated hardcover color catalog can be purchased for $45 postpaid ($55 outside the USA). All forms of bidding will be available for the auction, including live via the Internet through www.LiveAuctioneers.com.

If what was said, so far, doesn’t impress you, just check out some of the recently revealed dealers who will be exhibiting at the event.

Alan Green, owner of American Jazz Antique Toys, will be bringing some of his finest inventory of merchandise, followed by Mike Caffarella, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who will be offering early American tin toys, mechanical toys and banks.

Additional exhibitors will include Mark Schlesinger, of New Jersey, who will be bringing some antique penny arcades, occupying 16 ft. of exhibit space with Ken Schnoll, owner of Antiques Slots, who will be offering an array of antique slot machines and other coin-op related items.

If this still doesn’t impress you, here’s something to chew on… Rich Brinkos (a/k/a The Gumball Guy) will be loading up his truck with all sorts of antique and vintage gumball machines, while exhibiting next to Larry Garland, who will occupying 24 ft. of exhibit space to accommodate antique jukeboxes, pinballs, trade stimulators and other rare toys and collectibles.

Exhibitor Bob Adams, of Connecticut, will also be occupying 24 ft. of exhibit space to display antique amusement items, advertising items, and coin-ops, to name just a few categories.

A new addition to the show is exhibitor Tom Sage, Sr., of Allentown, Pennsylvania, who is one of the best-known antique toy dealers in the world.

More quality exhibitors from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, who specialize in antique and vintage collectibles, have responded to the show; including Ken Farrell, owner of Just For Kids Nostalgia, who is interested in utilizing 16 feet of exhibit space.

Those who are seeking vintage toys and memorabilia will be able to choose from a variety of dealers, including Wex Rex, Heroes Unlimited, and Milo Toys & Collectables.

“Exhibitor space inside the auditorium of the Civic Center is sold out,” Vastola said. “We are now expanding into a second exhibit hall”.

The American Antique Toy & Coin-Op Show is set to debut on Saturday, March 3, at the Eastern Civic Center, situated within walking distance from the Metro-North Train Station in Old Greenwich, Connecticut.

General admission into the event is $10 for adults and free for children under 12. Early buyers are welcome Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. and also Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. for $20 per person each day. Parking is free.

Attendees are encouraged to come hungry, in order to taste a variety of food and beverages offered for sale by Joemomma Foods, Inc. of Hershey, Pennsylvania.

“Joemomma Foods of Hershey will be offering dinner on Friday evening and breakfast and lunch on Saturday,” Vastola said. “This will be a nice treat for everyone,” he added.

Exhibitors wishing to set up inside the second hall of the Eastern Civic Center, should contact USA Theatres at (717) 542-0567 or email usatheatres@yahoo.com

You may also visit the website, www.usatheatres.com/conventions

For hotel accommodations, everyone is encouraged to contact the Hilton Stamford Hotel & Executive Meeting Center, the official hotel of the American Antique Toy & Coin-Op Show. The hotel is conveniently located just 1.4 miles, 4 minutes from the Eastern Civic Center.

A Trojan “Half Moon” display card made £1100, 2 x uncatalogued Trojan half sets £2600 and £2500 apiece, a scarce issue boxed Windmill by FG Taylor made an amazing £600 and an early Timpo U.S. Marines display set £740.

Following closely on the heels of the plastics were two superb civilian sections, highlights included, a staggering £6200 paid for a (possibly) unique boxed Phillip Segal set of Cricketers, £1100 for a rare version TandB Jazz Band, £3500 for a unique Nestle’s World Cow Farm set, £1300 for TandB Visitors at Tea set, £1400 for a Britains Set 137F – Tractor and Clockwork Trailer and £950 for a Britains M/C Combination.

AMONG the very earliest of American-made toys are the rarely seen tinplate Riverboats designed and manufactured by such firms as Althof Bergmann and Francis Field & Francis in the 1860s and 70s.

They are quite fragile by now, of course, which may account for the scarcity of some of them which were not originally made of cast iron or
even hard wood.

We have rescued four such toys for you today, all made of hand painted or stenciled tinplate. And all originating in the middle of the century before last. Europe was putting their creative efforts into Sailboats at that time, but not much else in the marine line.

BY STEVE BUTLER

UNFORTUNATELY, BOXED SETS tend to be stored away, out of sight and out of mind – places where they can’t be truly enjoyed. On the bottom shelf of my center storage cabinet is the home for the #375 Courtland DO-IT YOURSELF set pictured herein. I was looking for a subject for my next ATW article (this one) when I noticed the set. I checked my records and found despite my disbelief that I hadn’t written about this very scarce Courtland set during the three years I’ve owned it. Actually, I bought the set at the Kane Co. (a.k.a. Chicago) show in October, 2008 – an unsolicited testimonial.

It appears that Courtland started making tin toy trucks perhaps as early as 1947. Their first examples were of a squared-off cab construction with minimal character replete with edges sharp enough to slice fingers – bad for protective parents but good for Band-Aid sales. Thereafter, the company came out with a redesigned but still generic cab. Their new cab had a plastic roof attached at the belt line to a tin lower unit. Later production units would have a grill that resembled a 1951-52 Ford.

EVERY ONCE IN A BLUE MOON a good reader of this magazine will send me a set of pictures and a fact sheet for a toy I never knew even existed. Who sez mail can’t occasionally be exciting?

Here are two such toys that have come my way recently. They are both unique, both inordinately scarce, and exciting to see. I hope you’ll agree. Could you handle this Doll Steam Car, a Twenties phaeton that has it all? The Bibb Family, Lindsay and Danny, sent me this magnificent picture not very long ago. I turned an unbecoming green when I first saw it. Here are the facts: This Doll Steam Car gets its propulsion by means of a flame (!!!) heated boiler under the hood, which has a hinged top. The steam is then piped to a cylinder connected to an actuating rod which provides rotary power through bevel gears to one of the rear wheels.

HUMILIATION AND SUFFERING were the fates of the unfortunate blacks unwillingly brought to this country from Africa. Thrust into a world of slavery, their music and dance provided a measure of solace and maintainment of cultural identity.

The soul-stirring melodies of the slave eventually evolved into a form of musical entertainment enjoyed by the non-black public. This was demonstrated during the mid to late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when Minstrel shows became a popular part of Vaudeville theatrical performances.

This “new” music and dance did not escape the attention of enterprising manufacturers of children’s playthings. Both hand-operated and key-wind toys were created in the image of “Jigger” dancing figures.

The Ferdinand Strauss Corp. of New York, N.Y. was the foremost distributor and producer of animated tin-plate toys of the early twentieth century. One of their creations, “Thrifty Tom’s Jigger Bank” and the subject of this article, was a toy mechanical bank representing the Minstrel performer of those Vaudeville shows.

After a very successful initial outing in December at Morphy’s, part two of an advanced collection of advertising figures will cross the auction block, together with additional consignments of comparable quality. In all, there are approximately 100 lots of figures produced from the 1920s to 1950s.

“There’s a tremendous variety,” said Morphy Auctions associate Mike Karberg. “Any product you can imagine is included, from alcoholic beverages and sporting goods to clothing, food and consumer goods.”

Highlights include an extremely rare Mr. All-American Hot Dog figure advertising Jordan’s Franks, estimate: $1,000-$2,000. Also in the collection are four figural advertising pieces featuring Esquire magazine’s dapper mascot, Esky. From a different consignor comes a 1940s composition advertising figure depicting the “Kelvinator (Refrigerators) Lady.” Estimate: $800-$1,200.

The Friday session includes 50+ pressed-steel toys (e.g., Keystone, Buddy ‘L’) and 150 tin wind-up and battery-operated toys, with many key items from Marx and Linemar. A clean Buck Rogers Rocket Fighter in its original box, a Schuco teddy bear on scooter and a desirable boxed Batman battery op are among the top lots. A single-owner collection of approximately 80 Howdy Doody toys will be offered, as well.

More than 150 European wind-up toy lots span automotive, nautical and other categories. Around 50 colorful penny toys, mostly Continental in origin, are in excellent condition and come from a long-held collection. There are numerous autos, motorcycles and specialty figurals, such as an articulated sailboat and soccer players. An additional European lot in this section is a large “Holland” biscuit tin ship.

Among the 200 character lots are 50+ vintage wristwatches, many in their original boxes. Characters represented include Mickey Mouse, the Lone Ranger, Davy Crockett and Donald Duck. A Howdy Doody wristwatch store display is a standout in this category.

The Saturday session begins with 50+ figural cast iron lots, including bottle openers, doorknockers and paperweights. Cast-iron mechanical banks are led by a Perfection Registering bank that Morphy’s CEO Dan Morphy says is “one of the nicest examples [he’s] ever seen.” Estimate: $25,000-$35,000. Other mechanicals include a Mammy with Spoon (blue dress version) and a near-mint Santa at the Chimney.

Over 100 cast-iron toy lots will cross the auction block, with a large assortment of motorcycles, trucks and cars by Hubley, Arcade and Kenton.

A wonderful selection of more than 200 toy train lots awaits bidders, with many pieces coming from the Estate of Kenneth J. Rohrbaugh. “The trains in the Rohrbaugh grouping had been on loan to the Lincoln Train Museum in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania,” explained Morphy’s Chief Operating Officer Tom Sage Jr.

The predicted top lot in the train section is an outstanding Lionel Mickey Mouse Circus Train set, complete with its original box and cardboard inserts. Additionally, there are many excellent prewar Lionel 0 gauge passenger sets with original boxes, an American Flyer standard gauge stadium set in original set box, and a number of more contemporary trains, including productions from MPC and MTH (Mike’s Train House.)

“There’s a good mix of trains,” said Sage, “including a standard gauge white Ives 3243 set, an American Flyer President’s Special set, Marklin and other European trains.”

With the expert oversight of Brian Schutzer and Pittsburgh’s legendary Sparkle City Comics, Morphy’s will launch its new Comic Books division during the third session of the Feb. 9-11 event. More than 250 prized comics from an original-owner collection will be offered, including a 1963 The Amazing Spider-Man No. 1, CGC-graded in 8.5 condition, which is expected to realize $25,000-$30,000. Other anticipated top lots include a 1963 X-Men No. 1 and a 1963 Tales of Suspense No. 39 featuring the first appearance of Iron Man.

All forms of bidding will be available for Morphy’s Feb. 9-11, 2012 auction, including live at the gallery, phone, absentee, and live via the Internet through Morphy Live or LiveAuctioneers.com. The auction will commence at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb. 10; and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11.
“It was like an old-fashioned sale in terms of turnout. It drew about the same size crowd we had in the very same hall 23 years ago, at our first auction in New Hope. You don’t see that sort of turnout nowadays, with so many people opting for the convenience of phone and Internet bidding. It was one heck of a crowd,” said Noel Barrett.

“The auction took us full circle in a number of ways. I was able to point to a poster in the sale and say, ‘I sold this 23 years ago, and now it’s come back to us,’” Barrett continued. “That’s what the Bill Powell collection represented – antique toys and signs that had been off the market for decades. It was very exciting to see such a full house. All of the major buyers turned out.”

Friday’s 386-lot toy session was dominated by a British toy, an 1880s William Britain “Automatic Foot Race.” The clockwork toy featuring two quaint, cloth-dressed figures that trot around a paper-litho metal cylinder crossed the finish line at $18,400, against an estimate of $5,000-$12,000. The buyer was an American participating by phone.

Another early Britains production that finished near the top of the toy session was a Don Quixote and the Windmill Parlour Game. The scarce toy featuring a painted-wood windmill with tin blades and an armor-clad rider on horseback even retained its original box lid. The game outpaced its estimate of $2,000-$3,000 to end its run at $8,625. A Britain’s Drinking Highlander automaton garnered an identical winning bid.

An unusual 19th-century pull toy of painted tin with cast-iron wheels featured a uniformed cadet figure pulling a platform topped by a maypole with circling boy and girl figures. It finished just above its high estimate at $12,650.

Another toy that found favor with bidders was a French horse-drawn tin omnibus floor toy emblazoned with “Compagnie Generale Des Omnibus” and a point of departure and destination sign reading “Gare d l’Est – Montrouge.” Very nicely detailed and carrying 12 painted composition passenger figures, it breezed past its $2,500-$4,500 estimate to settle at $11,500.

The auction’s overall top lot was an appealing painted tin-on-wood sign believed to have come from a shop on Atlantic City’s Boardwalk. It advertised “ice cream, fancy cake and all kinds of soft drinks,” the types of treats so popular with beachgoers both a century ago and today. The gold lettering and image of a mound of ice cream being served up on a silver utensil were remarkably clean, suggesting the sign had avoided exposure to harsh elements. Against an estimate of $8,000-$12,000, the sign was bid to $46,000.

A 19th-century, full-color wood sign advertising Chas. F. Wagner Furs featured a painted cartouche with the three-quarter image of a woman wearing an ermine-collared fur vest, her hands concealed in a fur muff. Against an estimate of $15,000-$18,000, the 58-inch-tall by 29-inch-wide sign achieved $26,450.

Both a J. F. Wiessner Lager painted-tin sign with the image of a foaming pint, and a “Glasses Fitted” optician trade with a suspended pair of oversize spectacles commanded individual prices of $12,650.

An elaborately detailed watchmaker’s trade sign shaped like a pocket watch with Roman numerals brought a surprising $11,500 – more than seven times its high estimate. But even Noel Barrett didn’t expect the intense interest in a painted-wood fishing lure trade sign replicating a speckled fish, estimated at $1,500-$2,500. “There were a lot of people on the phones for that sign, and one of them ended up being the buyer at $19,550,” Barrett said.

Sometimes the type of product being advertised on a sign can be just as important as the graphics. A case in point was the lithographed cardboard sign touting Hansen’s Auto Gauntlets and illustrated with the image of a liveried driver wearing a pair of the sturdy gloves. “Sometimes automotive items can be totally surprising, because the field is so strong. I had never seen this sign before, and it had a great image,” said Barrett, commenting on the winning bid of $9,775 (est. $400-$800).

Provenance played a role in the success of an “Allegiance to No Crown” oil painting from the Greg and Molly Caron patriotic Americana collection. The artwork with provenance from the legendary Bernard Barenholtz collection ignited a bidding battle amongst six phone competitors. The painting of a sailor holding an American Flag and Victory holding a laurel wreath above his head flew past its $2,500-$3,500 estimate to sell for $8,625.

While the packed room and bank of busy phones were the source of furious bidding on many lots, the Internet was a huge presence, as well, with 1,000 registered bidders taking part through LiveAuctioneers.com. In the end, online bidders accounted for 17% of the gross and 32% of the lots sold.

Noel Barrett will conduct his next sale on Nov. 16-17, 2012, the weekend before Thanksgiving. For additional information call 1-215-297-5109 or e-mail toys@noelbarrett.com. Visit Barrett’s website at www.noelbarrett.com.

THE MODEL CARS FEATURED in this article were made by JNF. Josef Neuhierl founded the company in Furth, Germany in 1920. His company was among the most prestigious sheet metal toy production companies. They manufactured metal cars from 1920 to 1956, which was the introduction of plastic cars. In 1963 Carrera, a.k.a. Neuhierl was formed. Today, Carrera is the world’s leading manufacturer of slot car racing sets.

The cars were made in 1955 and are extremely rare. This is because of their high cost and few were imported into this country. They were made for only a few months before production was changed to plastic models. The cars were fabricated from sheet steel and hydraulically deep drawn to form their shape. This produced a one piece body with no seams and die marks visible on the top and sides. The cockpit uses a separate formed metal piece to enclose the entire cockpit without any shown fasteners. The dash was accurately produced showing various gauges and two rear view mirrors. The steering wheel was a replica of the exact pattern and was capable of turning the front wheels. The seat was finished in the exact pattern and color scheme as the original.
