ON A MUCH TOO seldom occasion, a collector may encounter things with tags, not necessarily price tags although they can be interesting. Instead, this tome is about things with tags that indicate a time, place, event or other circumstance(s) under which the toy was made, issued and/or acquired all not necessarily reflecting the price. As examples of some toys with tags, please review the following four toys.
The first is somewhat of a repeat or more definitively a continuation. Readers may recall the November 2010 issue of Antique Toy World. Presented therein was a Tootsietoy DeSoto Airflow with a roof imprint reading “DETROIT NEXT.” Included with that toy was a tiny 2 1/4″ by 2 5/8″ letter addressed “Dear Member.” The text therein began with “Detroit invites you and looks forward to the opportunity of entertaining you.” That is followed by text touting the benefits of having a convention in Detroit. The letter was signed by Mayor Frank Couzens. Well, Mayor Couzens gave away some Tootsietoy 1935 Fords as well.
