King of the Road: The Fascination of Motorcycle Toys

WHETHER IT BE THEIR striking colours, stylish riders or the thrill of the open road that they evoke, tin toy motorcycles have been generating a buzz in salerooms over the past year. Long parked in the second row of collectable toy vehicles, behind trains, automobiles and boats, the recent acceleration of interest in collecting toy motorcycles began when Auction Team Breker in Cologne, Germany, sold a single-owner group of seventy-three in November 2013, followed by a second installment on November 15, 2014.

Yet as early as 1984, Jac Remise devoted a chapter of his Encyclopédie des Jouets to the bicycle and noted that motorcycles, in particular, “will certainly be one of the major collecting themes in the future”.
