The pictured Focal Point presentation in last month’s issue of Antique Toy World featured the Allis-Chalmers Tractor made by Lionel for promotional use by Allis-Chalmers. Along with the tractor, the companion toy, Lionel’s Allis-Chalmers Motor Scraper, was acquired from the same source at the same time. This 7.5-inch orange plastic scraper was primarily intended for loading onto a Lionel flat car. It was introduced in 1959 and produced in a few variations thereafter. This example is known as a “Type 1” due to the wire windscreen frame, which was removed in subsequent models. The toy is identified by “ALLIS-CHALMERS” heat-stamped in black on both sides of the engine cover and in white on black on both sides of the removable scraper rear. The Type 1 Scraper was issued in three configurations, all considered quite scarce and highly regarded: as the load on the flat black or red Lionel 8617 flat car, as the Lionel 6817-100 Allis-Chalmers Motor Scraper in a separate sale orange box, and as the Lionel 6817-100 Allis-Chalmers Motor Scraper in a “Tiger Striped” box for promotional distribution by Allis-Chalmers. A later version was issued in a plain white box with printed content information, and mint/boxed examples are also rare and highly sought after. Like the Allis-Chalmers Tractor, the Scraper is likely one of the most highly detailed toy examples. It is capable of scraping (though this is inadvisable despite the printed instructions), and the angular panel atop the rear scraper is removable and prone to damage or loss. Additionally, it is particularly noteworthy that this Scraper might be the only toy to realistically feature the exhaust stack attached to the manifold and running through the engine cover above, though the engines for the two Allis-Chalmers toys are different. The box also deserves attention, as two opposite side panels have slanted orange and black stripes, hence the “tiger striped” description. The other two side panels feature black and white pictures of the real counterpart in operation, one of which shows the Scraper being pushed by the Tractor, making the box one of the most interesting toy boxes.
