THREE SIGNIFICANT VARIATIONS of this toy Indianapolis 500 race car have been identified other than colors. The earliest was issued by Rite Spot. It was a very popular wind-up racer representing the Adams/Sparks racer driven by Rex Mays in the Indy 500 in 1939. Mays finished 5th in the car while George Robson won in 1946 driving the same race car. Using the same toy racer, Wen-Mac issued in 1953 a gas powered version after making several necessary modifications. The company named it an “AUTOMITE.”
