Marklin “Fidelio” Toys 1893-1940

 In Tin Toys

By Jack Gilsdorf

I TRANSITIONED FROM operating Marklin HO trains in my youth to a full blown collector of various Marklin trains and toys. My uncle was the US Consul General in Berlin after WW2 and had a large Marklin HO layout in his house which he constructed after he retired.

After his death in the late 1950s, the layout was disassembled and sent to our family in the US. My brothers and I constructed and operated several large layouts into the 1960s. As we grew up to pursue our college educations and subsequent careers, the toy trains were packed away.

Fast forward to the 1980s when it became evident that Marklin trains were highly collectable.
