IN THE LATE 19th Century two innovations, the bicycle and the automobile, led to the creation of the first pedal cars. In 1817 German Baron Karol von Drais invented the first bicycle, the Laufmaschine (“running machine” or “swiftwalker”). It had two wooden wheels with iron rims and leather-covered tires. (A) The rider sat saddle-like and propelled the bike by striding, feet on the ground.
