THE TOY OFTEN identified as the first Mickey Mouse toy is attributed to a design by Disney Studio artist Bert Gillett. According to the Walt Disney company archives, Gillett sketched the mechanical wood toy & sent the sketch to Walt who approved. The sketch then went to the Geo. Borgfeldt company & Borgfeldt was asked to produce the toy in 1930. The large rectangular decal on the chest has the Disney copyright date of 1928-1930. 1928 is the earliest copyright date to appear on a Disney licensed & authorized toy.
