Sweet Trucking
By Steve Butler
IFE SAVERS WERE introduced in 1912 and were only one flavor, peppermint. The best selling roll of five fruit flavors appeared in 1935. Sometime in the interim at least an orange flavor was issued as evidenced by a 1920s photo of a real Life Savers truck that had “ORANGE DROPS” on the sides of the rear. That pictured truck was very similar to the design that Hubley used for its cast iron “LIFE SAVERS” truck that appeared in 1930.
Pictured are a pair of original examples of Hubley’s Life Savers truck. Note that the two trucks were shaped to house a roll of Life Savers.
