BUILDING BLOCKS are likely one of the first toys ever invented. They’re certainly among the most enduring. Today they’re generally made of wood or plastic, but at the Turn of the Century, another material was popular…stone. European toy makers mixed sand, chalk, and linseed oil, molded it into blocks of various shapes, dyed them “red, buff, or slate”; and packed them snugly in sturdy wooden boxes.
