IN THE LATE 19th Century, American toymakers created boats that could sail any carpet with ease. Among those who specialized in paper and wood toys were Milton Bradley, Bliss, and W. S. Reed, each producing battleships, sidewheelers, sloops, and schooners. Tugboats that towed barges were offered too.
